Diabetes in pregnancy | Diet tips for high sugar in pregnancy | Dietitian Sonali Wagle

During pregnancy, your placenta makes hormones that cause glucose to build up in your blood. Usually, your pancreas can send out enough insulin to handle it. But if your body can't make enough insulin or stops using insulin as it should, your blood sugar levels rise, and you get gestational diabetes.

Here are the diet tips for diabetes in pregnancy. Such a diet will allow the optimum growth of the baby but at the same time will help keep blood sugar under control.

Tips –
1. Have small & Frequent meals
It will lead to a healthy weight gain & control your blood sugar levels

2 Prefer fiber & protein rich food in your meals & as a mid morning & mid evening snacks
( Salad / fruits / Buttermilk / Nuts )

3. Light snacks – Khakara , Sprouts salad , Rajgira / Jowar / Wheat puffs

4. Dry fruits – avoid dates , dry figs ( prefer this in hypoglycemia / low blood sugar which is less than 100mg/ dl )

5. Take good combination of complex carbohydrate , protiens & fibers in your meals

Complex carbohydrate- Whole grains , Cereals , Daliya , Brown rice
Proteins – Non veg – egg , chicken , fish
Veg – Milk , Milk products , Pulses , Sprouts , Nuts
Fibers – Green salad , sprouts , fruits , green leafy vegetables

6. Take one cereal at a time – either Chapati / Bhakari / Rice

7. Overweight / Obese – Prefer low fat food – skimmed milk , egg white , chicken , fish etc

8. Prefer Low Glycemic Index food ( Low GI ) – refer chart from video

9. Do regular exercise as per gynecologist opinion

10 Avoid vigorous exercise

      1. You can have 1 jowar bhakari but don’t have two carbohydrates together like rice and jowar bhakari. Too much carbohydrate at one time can increase sugar levels.
      2. Jowar do not reduce sugar.

    I m suffering from thyroid and gestational diabetes.. running 5 th month..diet follow karne k bad bhi mera sugar level 159;145;167 tak chala jata hai..to abe kya karu or isse baby pe kya asar hoga?? Please reply me ..I m very worried..dr.ne dava bhi di hai vo bhi le rahi hu..
